Question du Jour #11

Here's one for ya, courtesy of today's visit to the Mont St. Michel: Forgetting the rope and the surrounding Spaniards (although I do appreciate the size perspective they offer)...

How big a hamster do you think it would take to get this wheel moving?

  1. Based on the picture, I'd estimate that wheel as about 12 feet in diameter, while I'd guess the normal hamster wheel is 1 foot in diameter. So the multiplier factor would be 12 squared, or 144. The wheel pictured (covered in wood) looks much heavier, relatively speaking than the traditional wire mesh hamster wheel. So let's double that factor to 288 and round up to 300, to make it easier to survey the available hamster population. I don't know what the average hamster weighs, but if we say 3 pounds, then you should go out looking for 900 pound hamsters.

  2. A 3-lb. hamster might set some records in itself; let's say just half a pound. Where are we now?

  3. 150 lb. hamster. Might make a nice Great Dane. But it's hard to see a Great Dane turning this thing, so maybe a 300 lb. hamster?
